Hazel Reeves sculpted the figure and designed the Meeting Circle that surrounds it. Emmeline Pankhurst was a British political activist, suffragette and militant who fervently fought for women's suffrage throughout her lifetime. Her empowering legacy still guides us today. If not for her, women may not possess the right to vote today.

Although she was widely criticised for her militant tactics, her work is recognised as a crucial element in achieving women’s suffrage in Britain. Emmeline Pankhurst is the recognised face of the suffragette movement. It can be argued that her extreme methods alienated or excluded large sections of the public, but these methods brought about much needed publicity resulting in a bolstering of support for more moderate suffragist groups.
